What is the process for an involuntary committal?
An individual may petition the court for an involuntary committal for a family member or friend who is chemically dependent or mentally ill and is considered to be a danger to themselves or others. The petitioner must be able to provide specific facts to support their concerns and the names of witnesses who can also attest to the concerns or behaviors noted in the petition. Petition forms and more detailed instructions can be obtained from the Ward County State’s Attorney’s Office at (701) 857-6480. If the petition is granted, a law enforcement officer will serve the order on the individual and see that they are transported to a treatment facility.
