It's Fair week - welcome to Minot!

Posted on July 17, 2024 at 2:56 PM by Bryan Obenchain

Dear Minot:

Is it time for the North Dakota State Fair already?

A quick drive past the fairgrounds on Burdick Expressway East will tell you everything you need to know. The grounds have been full of activity for the past couple of weeks, and things got really busy out there over the past weekend.

Yep. It’s Fair week. This year’s State Fair runs from Friday through July 27.

Fair week is always an exciting time in Minot. The outstanding entertainment both in front of the grandstand and at the countless free stages, the endless commercial displays, the carnival games and rides, the top-notch 4H and FFA exhibits and displays, the variety of food favorites, and, in general, the entire atmosphere makes Fair week special every year. There’s a little bit of something for everyone at the Fair, which is what helps make it so special.

As Mayor of Minot, I want to welcome everyone who will visit Minot this week to partake in the events of the State Fair. We’re glad you’re here, and we know you’ll enjoy not only your time at the Fair, but your time in our great community as well.

As residents of Minot, the State Fair offers an annual opportunity for us to showcase our great city. Every year, thousands of people from all across North Dakota and a host of other states arrive in Minot to experience everything the Fair has to offer. They’re also looking for other activities to enjoy while they’re here, and Minot has plenty to offer.

I’d encourage visitors to check out visitminot.org for more information on everything from local farmers markets to unique shopping and dining experiences to our world class Magic City Discovery Center to our acclaimed Roosevelt Park Zoo. Maybe check out the Dakota Territory Air Museum, the Scandinavian Heritage Park, live music at a number of local establishments, or join us at the Minot Public Library for a variety of activities for adults and children of all ages. You’ll find a wide variety of experience to enjoy while you’re in Minot.

On Saturday morning, the North Dakota State Fair Parade represents a unique opportunity for residents of Minot and our visitors to gather for this one-of-a-kind event. As hundreds of parade exhibits cruise down Broadway and Burdick Expressway on their way to the Fairgrounds, they’ll be met with enthusiastic crowds full of smiling faces and waving children. The parade route offers plenty of locations for you and your family to sit and watch as years of history make their way to the Fairgrounds.

I’d also encourage Minot residents to recognize the opportunity our community is given every year. It’s an honor to be the host of the North Dakota State Fair and the parade. Yes, I know it means our streets will be busier than usual with vehicle traffic, and it means you might have to wait a little longer to get a table at your favorite restaurant. But it’s all worth it.

It’s worth it because of what the State Fair represents to our community, not only from an economic standpoint, but more importantly, from a social standpoint. Don’t think for a minute that any of the other major cities in North Dakota wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to be the host of the State Fair. The fact that Minot continues to be home to the State Fair is a testament to our community’s commitment to being gracious and welcoming hosts to the thousands of visitors who descend on Minot every year.

It’s Fair week. I challenge all of us to welcome our guests with open arms, and to share everything that Minot has to offer. Have a safe and enjoyable Fair week, everybody.
